What is Pilates?
Pilates fitness is a full body conditioning approach to exercise. It is a gentle form of resistance exercise designed to strengthen and stretch your muscles, while engaging your deep core muscles. Every Pilates exercise is performed with precise movement to maximize the efficiency while minimizing stress on the body. Postural alignment and harmony of breath are principles of the Pilates goal for a sense of well being.
Who can practice Pilates?
Anyone! Regardless of age, gender or fitness level. Improve your life and specifically your sport.

Many residents of Vail, AZ and the surrounding area benefit from Pilates by taking private Pilates lessons or group Pilates classes at The Pilates Station.
What do we do?
Instructors of The Pilates Station are trained to monitor and correct movement patterns and positions. They will guide you to consciously work the stabilizer muscles while doing all stretches and resistance training. This form of exercise allows you to get a sense of how you move in everyday life so you can make changes in movement patterns that will help keep you pain and injury free. After much practice, your body will unconsciously and habitually brace against the potentially destabilizing movements of arms, legs and torso.
We work with all varieties of clients and most specifically clients with back issues including spinal stenosis, osteoporosis and herniated discs. One of the major complaints that new clients advise is that their back “bothers” them. Pilates is a whole body exercise that always works the deep “core” muscles: the pelvic floor, transverse abdominas, diaphragm, and multifidis (small muscles that wrap each vertebra). These muscles are engaged when the body is stabilized while exercising superficial muscles like the latissimus dorsi, obliques, quadriceps, etc. The precision and control used in Pilates strengthens and stretches the muscles providing a wonderful way not only to treat back “issues”, but if performed on a regular basis can help in preventing injuries.
How do we do this?
All our training is done on Pilates equipment specifically designed to enhance the Pilates Method. Pilates training will increase:
- Abdominal and Back Strength, Core Stability
- Balance and Coordination
- Body Awareness
- Correct Posture and Alignment
- Muscular Endurance
- Range of Motion
- Strengthen and Stretch Muscles
Pilates techniques are effective tools for rehabilitation and often rehab patients are referred to Pilates studios where a program is individually tailored to meet their bodies needs. They are guided to tune in and listen to their bodies.
After Physical Therapy from stroke, joint replacement, a fall, or any acute or chronic injury, Pilates exercise can benefit. For more detailed assessment of more serious client needs, The Pilates Station has allied itself with Mike Dubois of Momentum Physical Therapy LLC.
